Things to Do After Work Instead of Watch TV

After a long day at the office, many of us come home, eat dinner, and turn on the television. This routine pretty much carries on until bedtime, and the cycle starts all over again the next day. It’s normal to want to lounge around and engage in a mindless activity after work, but there are plenty of other ways you can spend your time. In fact, it’s much better to stimulate your body and your mind with activities that don’t include work. Additionally, it has been proven that too much screentime before bed can negatively impact sleep. Discover some new things to do after work that don’t involve the couch and your favorite show!

Exercise

Although exercising in the morning gets it out of the way, if you aren’t a morning person, this is a difficult task! Why not save your workout for the evening? Instead of coming home after work to watch TV, go to a workout class, ride a bike, or walk on the treadmill. If you don’t enjoy the gym, go for a walk around the block or on a local trail. Blowing off some steam after a long day of sitting at a desk is a good way to tire yourself out before bed for a good night’s rest.

Read a Book

When is the last time you sat down and read a good book? Understandably so, after a workday, you might not be in the mood to sit and read. However, reading just a few pages before bed is a good way to relax and prepare for bedtime. At the end of the day, you may have thoughts rushing through your mind. When you open a book, you can temporarily escape reality. Stimulate your mind, without exposing your eyes to the blue light emitted from a TV or smartphone. You’ll find that you fall asleep much quicker, and will feel more relaxed.

Clean and Organize

There’s nothing less pleasant than coming home to a messy home. In fact, sometimes cleaning and decluttering your home can help take your mind off everyday hindrances. Afterward, you will feel refreshed and renewed, and so will your space! You will sleep peacefully knowing that your chores are out of the way, and it will save you time from cleaning this weekend!

Meet with Friends

Sometimes after a long day, we want to be alone. Other times, being around your best friends can truly brighten your mood. Feeling upset after a stressful workday? Call up a friend and head to happy hour or grab dinner. If you don’t want to spend money, have them over and simply hangout. Social interaction is very important for our mental health, so call up your friend if you need some support! Put all electronics away and simply enjoy each other’s company.

Write in a Journal

Whether you’re reflecting on your day, how you’re feeling at the moment, or even your grocery list for the following week, journaling is a good way to clear your mind and relax. Buy yourself a journal and spend 10 minutes a day writing in it whatever you want. Journaling is a healthy way to release your emotions. Another good habit to practice is gratitude. Each day, try jotting down one thing you’re grateful for. Whatever you put down in your journal, you’ll likely feel refreshed afterward!

Next time you get home for work, instead of turning on the TV, consider going for a walk or reading a good book. There are plenty of things to do after work that will benefit your mind and body more than watching TV will! You will sleep better and feel better when you implement these new habits.
