MarieBette Café and Bakery

In the Rose Hill neighborhood in Charlottesville, you’ll find a small gem of a cafe called MarieBette Café and Bakery. While it may just look like a quaint bakery on the outside, MarieBette Café and Bakery offers full-service breakfast, brunch, and lunch in addition to fresh-baked pastries and rich coffee. Named after the daughters of the founders, MarieBette is locally-owned and operated. There is a smaller sister location called Petite MarieBette on the Downtown Mall. The smell of freshly baked bread and coffee add to MarieBette’s warm, charming atmosphere. You feel as if you are eating at a cafe in Paris, minus the Eiffel Tower, of course.

Petit Déjeuner at MarieBette

As a bakery, the bread and butter of MarieBette is breakfast, also known in French as petit déjeuner. You can order the Petit Déjeuner, which comes with a croissant, jam, coffee, and juice. Other light options include oatmeal, yogurt parfait, of a baker basket of three pastries. In addition to fresh bakery items, MarieBette offers tartines, which are open-faced sandwiches.  Try the Croque Monsieur, which is bread with ham, Gruyère, and Béchamel as toppings. Other breakfast items include baked eggs, pancakes, stuffed French toast, and a frittata.

Weekend Brunch

Only offered Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., MarieBette offers a brunch menu. Although the brunch menu features many of the items of the breakfast menu, there are a few other options. For a healthier choice, there are three salad options on the brunch menu. The Lacinato Kale salad is light and fruity with apple, parmesan, radish, pecans, drizzled with Lemon-Balsamic Vinaigrette. The Farfields Farm Steak & Eggs offers a heartier meal for those with a bigger appetite. A popular brunch item, though, is the Quiche Lorraine with bacon and Gruyère.

What’s for Lunch?

For lunch, you can still get salads and tartines, but you get a few more options as well.  In addition to French onion soup, there’s a soup du jour. You can find French-inspired dishes on the menu with the Vol-au-Vent and Chicken Paillard. MarieBette also offers several club sandwiches, including one called The Charlottesvillian, which has roasted tomatoes, artichokes, pickled onions, and smoked mozzarella.

Whether you’re going out for brunch or lunch, the beverage menu at MarieBette features amazing wine, local beer and cider, as well as sparkling wine cocktails. Next time you are going out to brunch with friends or having a lunch date, check out MarieBette Café and Bakery!
