Even though the temperature continues to drop as we head into the winter months, we’ve still got plenty of hiking weather left! National Hiking Day is November 17, so grab your hiking boots, a water bottle, a warm jacket, and a buddy. It’s always safer to hike in groups. Surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, there is no shortage of places to hike near Charlottesville. Whether you are new to the outdoor activity, or ready to conquer even the most difficult of hikes, there are plenty of trails ranging in difficulty all within close proximity to town.

Ivy Creek Natural Area

With over 215 acres and around seven miles of hiking trails, Ivy Creek Natural Area is the perfect place to hike near Charlottesville as it is just a short 15-minute drive from luxury apartment complex Beacon on 5th. Their motto is, “Take only pictures, leave only footprints.” In order to preserve the natural habitat and wildlife of the area, no pets, bikes, or collecting is not allowed. In addition to several hiking trails, there is also a historic barn on site that is open every Saturday and Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. from April until the last Sunday before Thanksgiving, according to their website.

There is also a handicap-accessible trail for those who need special accommodations. Ivy Creek Natural Area is a popular place for birdwatching, with a Quiet Observation Area for just that purpose. If you want to experience nature right in town, then be sure to check out Ivy Creek Natural Area.

Crabtree Falls

Just under an hour away from Charlottesville in Nelson County, Crabtree Falls is one of the best hiking spots in the area. You only have to walk a short distance to see one of the many waterfalls on this trail. However, the rest of the hike is pretty vertical, but it’s a rewarding trek with four other major waterfalls along the way. Once you reach the top, the mountain views are breathtaking! The hike is a bit more challenging with steep inclines and rocky terrain, but is definitely worth it!

Humpback Rocks

Another popular hike within a short driving distance to Charlottesville is Humpback Rocks. Located near the Blue Ridge Parkway in Afton, this hike may only be two miles long round trip to the rocks and back, but it is incredibly steep! There are places to rest as you go along, so be sure to take a break to catch your breath if needed. Even though the higher elevation provides a tougher hike, the payoff is greater. The view from the rocks is incredible, plus you’ll feel great after!

There are so many places to hike near Charlottesville with the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive in such close vicinity. Enjoy the cool weather and bundle up to keep warm on the hike. Always wear sunscreen and bring lots of water! A first aid kit is also essential to bring with you on the trail. Have fun hiking and exploring the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains!
