Charlottesville’s art community is thriving, with the city dedicated to supporting local artists. In addition to art galleries and museums, you can find local artwork in bars, restaurants, and other stores around town. As you are driving down the highway, you’ll even find sculptures in the median or on the side of the road. One way the city supports the art community is through First Fridays in Charlottesville: On the first Friday of every month, various locations in town feature art exhibit openings. In addition to showcasing the work of talented local artists, some exhibits will have receptions as well.
First Friday is about celebrating all art forms, whether it be ceramics, painting, sculpture, ink, or photography. Here are some upcoming First Friday events:
First Friday at Second Street Gallery with Tina Curtis
Second Street Gallery is presenting an exhibit titled “Radiolaria & Reef: Our Ocean’s Living Abstractions” by artist Tina Curtis. The exhibit features vivid oceanscapes with delicate detailing of marine life. Located in the Dové Gallery at Second Street Gallery on the Downtown Mall, Curtis’ artwork depicts a bright picture of coral reefs and barnacles, as well as other underwater organisms. The opening reception is on June 7 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with remarks from the artist scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
Women’s Work at McGuffey Art Center
Also on the first Friday in June is the opening for the Women’s Work show at McGuffey Art Center. Although the whole exhibit will be shown through the month of June, the opening reception will be June 7 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Held in the Second Floor Upper Hall of the art center, the Feminist Union of Charlottesville Creatives will present the exhibit. Furthermore, it features the work of 18 local female artists.
First Friday Solar Observing at Ivy Creek Natural Area
On the first Friday in July, Ivy Creek Natural Area will be hosting a solar observing event. From noon to 12:30 p.m. on July 5, join organizer and former President of the Charlottesville Astronomical Society Steve Layman as you view the sun through a telescope with a special filter. Located just off Earlysville Road, Ivy Creek Natural Area features trails that wrap around the Rivanna River Reservoir. After a short presentation on the sun, you’ll get to see it for yourself! Art is everywhere we go, especially in the natural beauty of the planet.
First Fridays in Charlottesville are a great way to feel inspired and refresh on a Friday afternoon or evening. Go experience something new and support your local artist community at the same time!
