Five Easy Steps to Create a Home Office That’s Stellar!

create a home office

Have you ever thought of using all that extra space in your second bedroom to create a home office? If so, you’re not alone. More of us work from home these days, with that number increasing all the time. Last year, a Gallup survey indicated that 43% of Americans work remotely from home at least part of the time.

But whether you work from home or not, it can still be great to have a dedicated space set aside in your apartment for managing bills, handling email correspondence, or just surfing the internet. Here is some advice on how to create a home office that’s stellar!

1.) Decide the Purpose of the Space

First of all, decide exactly how you want to use the space. Do you want it to still serve as a bedroom when you have guests? If so, do you want to keep a bed in the room or would a futon which converts to a bed suffice? Or do you want to use the entire space just for an office? You must answer these questions before designing your office so that you know how much space will be available to dedicate to your office furniture and equipment.

2.) Sketch Your Design

Draw out the dimensions of your room on paper or use software if that’s easier for you. First sketch in your bed or futon, since these are large, and then with the remaining space, sketch in your desk area. Consider lighting and the location of windows, doors, and electrical outlets when making your sketch. For example, do you want to be able to see out of a window when at your desk or do you prefer to be facing a wall? Based on Feng Shui principles, you should face the door, but not be in line with the door, and you should have a solid wall behind you. You may have to make several rough sketches before you get the design the way you want it, but this will save you time in the long run. For inspiration and ideas, check sites like Pinterest and HGTV.com. You can even user painter’s tape on the carpet in the room to outline where everything will go just to make sure your sketch is accurate before you go shopping.

3.) Pick Your Furniture

If you don’t already have a desk and other office furniture, then you’ll need to shop for furniture that fits well in your space. Shop for the desk first, and then a comfortable chair to go with it. Consider desks and chairs designed with ergonomics in mind, especially if you’ll be spending a lot of time in your office. Once you’ve decided on a desk and chair, then based on how much space is left, shop for other items like storage bins, shelving, printer stands, lamps, and other smaller items. Don’t forget about storage for items that you want to keep out of sight. Also, if you aren’t including a bed or futon in your room for sleeping, you may want to add some cozy seating for thinking, reading, or just relaxing.

4.) Set Up the Office

Refer to your design sketch when setting up the office and start with the biggest items first. If you’ve used the painter’s tape technique, you should know exactly where each item should go. Enlist the help of friends and family, if possible, if you need to assemble large items. If you don’t already have the bed or futon in the room, it may be a good idea to set up the desk and other large items first before bringing these in so you’ll have plenty of floor space for spreading out all the parts.

5.) Add Finishing Touches

Now that all the heavy work is done, it’s time for the fun part! You’re now ready to add your own personal style to your new home office. Add those cool desk lamps or floor lamps. Place family photos, sports memorabilia, or inspirational plaques on your desk or hang on bare walls. Hang a white board to remind yourself about daily to-dos. If your room has a futon or cushy chair, add pillows with interesting colors and patterns. Just remember when decorating your office that sometimes less is more. If you put too many things on your desk, for example, then you won’t have enough work space. Also, be mindful of what you put behind your desk in case you need to Skype or use other video conferencing programs from your desk.
