Farmers market season is finally here! As a city surrounded by sprawling farmland, we have an abundance of locally grown produce, meat, and cheeses. Shopping locally at the Charlottesville farmers markets supports your community in addition to the local economy. Not only are you helping small businesses, but you are also making a good choice for your health.
Fresh, organic produce and locally sourced meat grown without antibiotics beat the food you’ll find at a big box grocery store any day of the week. There are several farmers markets around Charlottesville, so be sure to check them out!
The City Market in the Downtown area may be the area’s most popular farmers market, with a central location right next to Water Street Parking Garage. The City Market is open from April to September, on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. City Market also has fall hours in October through November, also on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
A special holiday market is open from the end of November until a few days leading up to Christmas, so you can shop locally for gifts. Not only can you shop for locally grown produce, but there is a wide variety of vendors at the City Market. From handcrafted goods to coffee beans, you can find anything and everything at this Charlottesville farmers market!
Farmers in the Park
Not too far from the Downtown area is the Farmers in the Park market. Located at 300 Meade Avenue, this farmers market is open from May to October, on Wednesdays from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. If you are out of town for the weekend and unable to go to the City Market, you can stop by Farmers in the Park after work. Farmers in the Park usually has food trucks, produce, handcrafted goods, and more.
This market is known as a grower/producer-only market, which means that everything you find here has been sourced locally. Bring the whole family for an afternoon browsing the market, eating ice cream, and enjoying the beautiful park.
Stonefield Farmers Market
The up-and-coming Stonefield area in Charlottesville continues to grow in popularity as new stores continuously move into the relatively new shopping center. As there are plenty of apartments and a hotel near the area, Stonefield has its very own Farmers Market. In operation from May to October, the market is open on Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Also known as the Green Market at Stonefield, the open air market features fresh flowers, live music, fresh produce, and local vendors. Stonefield is in a great location right off Route 29, so it’s easy to get to.
If you’re looking for some of the area’s best locally grown fruits and veggies, then be sure to hit some of the Charlottesville farmers markets! Support your local community by shopping from small farms and businesses in the area.
