Practice Your Handwriting with Calligraphy Classes in Charlottesville

Calligraphy is known as the art of writing beautifully. The word itself is from the Greek words kallos meaning “beauty” and graphẽ meaning “writing.” We’re not talking about beautiful poems and novels, but the visual penmanship itself. Usually a cursive or script font, calligraphy is an ancient art form with roots in many cultures including Indian, East Asian, and Persian.

As National Handwriting Day approaches on January 23rd, why not practice your calligraphy skills? You never know, you may have just found your new favorite hobby!

What is Calligraphy?

So we’ve established that calligraphy is decorative handwriting, an art form that began thousands of years ago. Calligraphers typically create their art using a brush or nib, ink, and paper. Similar to a brush, a nib is the point of a quill pen that you dip into the ink. Even in this modern day and age, there are professional calligraphers who design wedding invitations, stationery, prints, and anything you can imagine. With Pinterest sparking a revival in home decor and crafts, calligraphy continues to grow in popularity.

As people return to this tradition and practice of handwriting, more are seeking to learn how to do calligraphy.  Many art centers and colleges are beginning to offer calligraphy classes. There are a few calligraphy classes in Charlottesville if you are interested in learning more about the art form.
